Wardle’s new bug discoveries mean Macs are vulnerable to webcam and mic takeover again, in addition to taking gaining root access to a Mac. Wardle goes through a history of Zoom’s privacy and security issues like the webcam hijacking we saw last summer, the calls not actually being end-to-end encrypted as the company claims, the iOS app sending user data to Facebook, and more. Reported by TechCrunch, the new flaws were discovered by Ex-NSA hacker Patrick Wardle, now principal security researcher at Jamf, who detailed his findings on his blog Objective-See.

Now two new bugs have been discovered that allow hackers to take control of Macs including the webcam, microphone, and even full root access. Your colleague should be able to join your meeting via the link in the email. Paste this text into an email and send it to your colleague. In the resulting window, select ‘Copy Invitation’, or ‘Copy URL’ (Copy Invitation is a much longer message with lots of options.). In the Zoom window's bottom bar, select 'Invite'. If needed, open and login to the Zoom Client. If needed, Click 'End Meeting' in the bottom right of your window. You can ignore the other options for now. Make sure the Video camera you want to use is selected and working. Click the Up Arrow next to Stop/Start Video. 
Make sure the window from Audio Setup is closed. If you have, and want to use, a video camera: If you cannot hear it your mic setup may be wrong. The Button will change to say ‘Playing’ and what you said will play back. The ‘Test Mic’ Button will now say ‘Recording.’ Click it to stop recording. Click ‘Test Mic’ and begin speaking into the microphone you selected. Click the Box next to Test Mic and make sure the device you want to speak into is selected. Click ‘Test Speaker’ and you should hear some music from the Speaker you selected. Click the Box next to Test Speaker and make sure the device you want to hear is selected. If you click on 'Audio Settings' the Audio Settings window will open. If you see ‘Mute’ and an Arrow, click the Up Arrow, then ‘Audio Settings’ from the menu. If you see ‘Join Audio’, just click it. Depending on if your computer detected audio, you will see one of these buttons in the left of the bar:. Once you have joined or started a meeting, you can begin to set up your Audio and Video hardware. Setting Up Your Microphone and Speakers, Headphones Often if you have a headset AND a microphone and speaker in the computer itself, these options may need to be configured.
